Microsoft Extends Win. 98/ME Support
by Ruben Bybee

top of page
Microsoft Corporation will extend support for Windows 98, Windows 98 SE, and Windows Millenium Edition through June 30, 2006, the company said Monday, reversing a decision from last month.
Support for Windows 98 and Windows SE had been scheduled to expire on Friday, and for Windows ME on December 31, but the software giant decided to keep supporting those systems in large part because some customers in developing countries were not aware it was ending.

"My Doom" on the Loose
by Katrina Moran

top of page
There is a new computer worm that is on the loose slowing down the internet and plaguing PC users. BMI customers are protected from getting this virus through their BMI email box, however, if you have a Yahoo, Hotmail or any other email box, you could be at risk. "My Doom" also known as "Novarg" is multiplying as fast as 100 times in 30 seconds. The worm looks like a normal message (possibly from someone you know) with an attachment with the following subject lines: test, hi, hello, mail delivery system, mail transaction failed, server report, status or error; that you receive by email. When a computer is infected, the worm will setup a backdoor into the system by opening TCP ports 3127-3198 which can potentially allow an attacker to connect to the computer and use it as a proxy to gain access to its network resources. The worm will perform a Denial of Service (DoS) starting on February 1, 2004. It also has a trigger date to stop spreading on February 12, 2004. These events will only occur if the worm is ran between or after those dates. While the worm will stop spreading on February 12, the backdoor component will continue to function after this date. For more information on this virus and Removal Instructions, please visit Symantec Website. You can also scan your computer for viruses for free by going to Trend Micro Website

Microsoft Offers $250,000 Reward
by Katrina Moran

top of page
Microsoft Corporation announced Jan. 29, 2004 that it will pay a $250,000 (U.S.) reward for information resulting in the arrest and conviction of those responsible for unleashing the MyDoom.B worm. MyDoom.B, is a variant of the earlier released MyDoom.A worm, also known as the Novarg worm. This virus infects the computers of unsuspecting consumers and automatically sends infecting e-mail to their e-mail contacts, blocks access to anti-virus vendor Web sites and www.microsoft.com, leaves a “backdoor” into infected computers, allowing any hacker to modify the existing worm without the user’s knowledge, and is designed to launch an attack against www.microsoft.com next month.
“This worm is a criminal attack,” said Brad Smith, senior vice president and general counsel at Microsoft. “Its intent is to disrupt computer users, but also to keep them from getting to anti-virus locations and other sites that could help them. Microsoft wants to help the authorities catch this criminal.”
Residents of any country are eligible for the reward, according to the laws of that country, because Internet viruses affect the Internet community worldwide.
Representatives of three law enforcement agencies, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the U. S. Secret Service and Interpol, have joined Microsoft in their investigations of this most recent worm.
Individuals with information about the MyDoom worm or any other worms or viruses should contact the following international law enforcement agencies:
  • International/Interpol via the Interpol National Central Bureau in any of Interpol’s 181 member countries at http://www.interpol.int/
  • FBI or Secret Service via any local field office The Internet Fraud Complaint Center at http://www.ifccfbi.gov/

    Parking Ticket
    by Shirley B.

    top of page
I went to the store the other day, and I was in there for only about 5 minutes. When I came out, there was a motorcycle cop writing a parking ticket. So I went up to him and said, "Come on, buddy, how about giving a guy a break?" He ignored me and continued writing the ticket. So I called him a pencil-necked dork. He glared at me and started writing another ticket for worn tires! So I called him a piece of horse poop. He finished the second ticket and put it on the windshield with the first. Then he started writing a third ticket! This went on for about 20 minutes....the more I abused him, the more tickets he wrote. I didn't care. My car was parked around the corner!

    The Golden Box
    by Shirley B.

    top of page
The story goes that some time ago a mother punished her 5 year old daughter for wasting a roll of expensive gold wrapping paper. Money was tight and she became even more upset when the child used the gold paper to decorate a box to put under the Christmas tree. Nevertheless, the little girl brought the gift box to her mother the next morning and said, "This is for you, Momma." The mother was embarrassed by her earlier over reaction, but her anger flared again when she opened the box and found it was empty. She spoke to her daughter in a harsh manner. "Don't you know, young lady, when you give someone a present there's supposed to be something inside the package?" She had tears in her eyes and said, "Oh, Momma, it's not empty! I blew kisses into it until it was full." The mother was crushed. She fell on her knees and put her arms around her little girl, and she begged her forgiveness for her thoughtless anger. An accident took the life of the child only a short time later, and it is told that the mother kept that gold box by her bed for all the years of her life. Whenever she was discouraged or faced difficult problems she would open the box and take out an imaginary kiss and remember the love of the child who had put it there.
